Revolutionizing Coffee Experience: Lavazza Voicy

Florian Seidl's Innovative Espresso Machine with Built-in Voice Assistant

Florian Seidl's design inspiration for Lavazza Voicy stemmed from a desire to create a compact, easily accessible coffee experience. The design builds on Lavazza's existing form language, characterized by a seamless exterior shell with embossed Lavazza logos on the sides and a prominently placed user interface (UI) incorporating the voice assistant. The result is a design that is recognizably Italian in its attention to detail, surfacing, and color, material, and finish (CMF).

What sets Lavazza Voicy apart is its unique properties. It is the first espresso machine with a built-in voice assistant, combining quality coffee with functions provided by Alexa. Users can interact with the device through the UI, voice commands, or use the app to check status, consumption, order coffee, and most importantly, make espresso. This smart product represents a harmonious blend of innovation, functionality, and aesthetics, catering to users who prefer a highly personalized coffee ritual.

The Lavazza Voicy is made primarily of ABS plastic, with a water tank made of SAN plastic. The logos are pad printed, and the drip grid and lever are made of metal. The feet and UI are made of silicone rubber, and the speaker is covered with a textile mesh. The machine is compact, with dimensions of 157mm x 380mm x 300mm and a weight of 4.5kg. All removable parts are dishwasher safe, making it user-friendly and easy to maintain.

The design process of Lavazza Voicy was carried out in Turin, Italy, and took approximately 20 months from initial concept to product launch. The development process involved conceptual and formal research, 3D modeling, physical mock-ups, and prototyping. One of the main challenges was developing a rich and sensible user experience and integrating the voice assistant properly.

Florian Seidl's innovative design has not gone unnoticed. Lavazza Voicy was awarded Platinum in A' Home Appliances Design Award in 2022, a prestigious award that recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs. This accolade is a testament to Seidl's genius in pushing the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology, and his contribution to enhancing the coffee experience.
